Professional Development

The Curriculum and Instruction Department serves the Hickory Public Schools by coordinating district-wide initiatives, curricular efforts, textbook adoptions and other curricular resources, and professional development (which includes the SEA System).   We act as a clearing house and point of contact for instructional resources.  In addition, the C and I department also facilitates instructional planning and improvement efforts.

  Florida Center for Reading Research This site is filled with student learning activities using the five strands of literacy.
  Reading Rockets Reading Rockets includes articles good for personal professional development, strategies for struggling readers, and family resources.
  Working with Words This website contains lots of resources for working with words.
  The Reading Lady This website has 95 different Reader's Theater plays to focus on reading fluency. Many are adapted from popular children's books.  This site is great for younger children and for ELL's.
  Open Court Resources There are many, many resources to compliment the Open Court reading program. You can find vocabulary ideas, workshop/center activities, worksheets, and other ideas to use directly with each unit.
  The School Bell Great site with Dolch, word cards, folder games and so much more for literacy.  Great for K-2 and remediation for 3-5.
  Reading A-Z This site provides access to thousands of leveled books and other reading materials.

  The Math Worksheet Site This website is great for creating hundreds boards or quick drills for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts. Other topics such as measurement are also posted.  Another convenient aspect of this site is the multiple ways to have problems presented as well as the numerous combinations of the facts on a page. Each student could have a different order of problems on his or her worksheet (like for drill) so copying would be much harder.

  I Know That! This website includes interactive stories in all subjects. There are several illustrated math word problems and language games.
  Computer Lab Kids K-5 material is presented as computer games.  It is divided into each nine week period for each grade level.  Implementing this site would work well as a classroom presentation on a TV monitor as well.
  Family Fun Magazine Activities, crafts, theme ideas, party ideas, printables, games, travel stuff and more.
  Printable Worksheets This site offers a variety of free printable worksheets for k-5 grade in every subject -- great for homework!
  School Express This site contains free lesson plans, worksheets, online games and math practice, as well as educational resources. There is also an online store but plenty of free resources.
  Busy Teacher's Cafe This K-6 site offers ideas for theme units, literacy centers, classroom management and much more

  The Writing Center -- University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Teachers will find fantastic student and faculty resources to improve their students' writing.  There are outstanding handouts that deal with everything from plaigarism,to paragraph-level instruction.  For teachers, there are tips for good writing instruction and handouts to help students analyze research sources and structure solid research writing.
  Outta Ray's Head This site offers English teachers a variety of lesson plans, instructional strategies, and ideas by genre, grade level, etc.  The plans and handouts are submitted by teachers from all over the US.  This is a great site for getting new ideas for teaching literature and grammar.

  Learn the Net Great for students, parents, grandparents, and teachers to learn specific internet-based topics . Good graphics and tutorials. Great for developing a "computer" vocabulary.
  Smithsonian Education On this site you can use the search fields to access Smithsonian educational resources or find resources aligned to the state standards. There are videos, and audio and power point presentations also available.
  Schools Attuned The Schools Attuned website is for teachers who have registered in previous courses.  Documents and resources are available for download.

  The Official Kids' Portal for the U.S. Government Kids.gov contains more that 1,200 webpages from the U.S government, agencies and schools, divided into age-appropriate groupings, and covering everything from health, to the arts, to social studies and language. Some featured sites include Smithsonian slideshows on mummy-making and Library of Congress resources for history and literature.
  National Association for Sports and Physical Education Good resourse for standard guidelines, grant opportunities, and lesson activities.
  Calendars that Work This website is wonderful for creating calendars for classroom use.  Create your own snack calendar each month or assignment calendar.  Download the calendar and then type children's names in.  You can also add pictures of your class to your calendars.

  Space Exploration This site offers wonderful Hubble telescope pictures of stars and space events.

  Dolch Sight Words These Dolch word cards are easily printed and laminated for individuals and pairs to practice. I mounted them in different colors for each level, and store them in ziploc bags. There are also check lists for keeping individual records.

  Barr Bunch This site has resources for preschool, kindergarten and primary teachers. There are many games, lesson plans, worksheets, etc from which to choose.

  Kindergarten Themes This website contains thematic units on all different topics and in all different areas. It can be adapted for K-2 classrooms.
  Computer Lab Skills K-5 material is presented as computer games.  It is divided into each nine week period for each grade level.  Implementing this site would work well as a classroom presentation on a TV monitor as well.
  The Smartie Zone This instructional website provides valuable resources for reading, math, and writing for K-2. There are several documents ready to print.
